Christchurch Angling Club is one of the longest established fishing clubs in the UK, having been founded in 1938.
They have some of the best fishing in the area for both coarse and game fishing enthusiasts. Their fisheries include some of the best stretches of the Dorset Stour and Hampshire Avon, including the famous Somerley Estate waters, which offer fantastic coarse lakes, coarse and salmon fishing on the river, trout fishing on Hamer Lake and brown trout fishing on the streams and carriers. The Club owns the fishing rights too many of its waters and they pride themselves in investing in their fisheries so that they continue to deliver excellent fishing for their members.
Although challenging, salmon fishing on the Somerley Estate and other stretches of the Hampshire Avon can produce some superb fish. For those willing to put in the hours, springers can be caught in excess of 25lb and are caught regularly each season. Although numbers of fish caught are not that great, the quality and size of fish make the Avon salmon a very worthwhile quarry. A fish of 32lb+ was landed from a stretch where we have the fishing on the opposite bank, a fish that would be regarded as a ‘fish of a lifetime’ on any salmon river in the world.
